Many dietary scholars, advocates and even peers who have transitioned into a plant based or vegan lifestyle will advocate the multiple benefits from adopting a diet free from meat, dairy, fish and eggs. However here I will explain why our bodies are biologically telling us to adopt veganism.

So the only reason you need to go vegan is because of the blood pH. Our blood pH naturally is optimized at 7.35 – 7.45. The pH scale runs from 1 (acid) to 14 (alkaline) with 7  being neutral. As you can tell from that, our blood is slightly alkaline on the pH scale. Blood is extremely important is it carries oxygen via red blood cells which is essential for all bodily process to happen.

So what does this mean for the foods we eat? We have all heard the saying “you are what you eat”, and this is true because the body’s cells, tissues and organs derive their energy from the foods that you eat. Therefore, eating certain foods will cause a shift in blood pH.


Food and blood pH

It turns out that foods that cause a more acidic shift in blood pH once digested tend to be animal derived, such as meat, fish, dairy and eggs. However foods that facilitate an alkalizing shift in the body when digested tend to be plant based such as fruit, vegetable (mainly green leafy), seeds and legumes.


Effect of going vegan

The significant effect of alkalizing your blood pH is that your body is able to functional more optimally. When your blood is “alkaline” there are minimal corrective metabolic processes occurring to fully compensate blood that has become more acidic through the consumption of acidic foods. Therefore the body has more energy to utilize which is why commonly more people report increased energy levels, better sleep and heightened focus after transitioning into veganism. Therefore the effect of going vegan leads to a biological shift in the blood pH which has a beneficial secondary impact on health and longevity.
